LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (BRAIN) — A year after taking over leadership of Orbea USA, Gonzalo Garcia de Salazar has been promoted to global sales manager for the Spanish brand.

"His mission will be to define and implement the brand's sales strategies on a global level, with the aim of growing and strengthening our positions in strategic markets, while also exploring new business opportunities," Orbea stated in a release.

Salazar will continue to be based out of Orbea's Little Rock office, home to the company's U.S. affiliate.

Bike industry execs meet with lawmakers in Washington

16 female industry execs meet to discuss the transportation bill and trade issues.

BOULDER, Colo. (BRAIN) — PeopleForBikes conducted another "fly-in" lobbying trip to Washington last week, when 16 female bike industry executives met with lawmakers to discuss the transportation bill, trade issues and more.

The group met with members of congress, their senior staff, and other influential stakeholders and coalition leaders to help move forward pro-bike business and industry goals.

The fly-in coincided with meetings happening on the Hill to discuss the transportation bill that is the largest check Congress writes for bike and pedestrian projects each year—roughly $820 million for 2,300 projects.

"This fly-in was critical because there were two amendments on the floor of Congress this exact week that would have stripped away bicycle funding. We were able to deliver our message of the powerful economics of the industry and how cycling is making communities better all over the country," said Elysa Walk, former general manager of Giant, who delayed her departure from the company to attend the fly-in.

"The timing of our PeopleforBikes Executive Fly-in was perfect, as important trade and transportation bills were on the floor in Congress," said Shinola's bicycle director, Sky Yaeger. "We talked about the Trans Pacific Partnership and Environmental Goods Agreement which could reduce or eliminate tariffs on bicycles and components and encourage global bicycle sales. Both issues pending will have a real impact on the industry. Meeting face-to-face with staff, members of congress and senators moved the needle in the right direction."

"We heard from the Marketplace Fairness Coalition on how the bike industry can continue to help forward legislation that creates sales tax parity between online sales and brick and mortar," Alix Magner, national sales manager at Quality Bicycle Products. "This is a serious issue for independent bicycle dealers and the political climate in Congress is getting closer to passing this important legislation. The next couple months are key so our timing for meetings was great."

QBP plans regional Fat Bike Summits for 2016

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (BRAIN) — Rather than one Global Fat Bike Summit as in the past, QBP will host four regional summits next year. The summits are meetings to discuss trail access and other issues affecting the growing activity of bike riding on snow. QBP has hosted four previous annual Global events.

"With variations in who owns public lands, and differences in snow textures and compaction rates, we think it makes sense to partner with existing fat bike races or festivals to host smaller, regionally focused Summits," said QBP's advocacy director, Gary Sjoquist. "We want to continue to drive fat-bike access on behalf of the industry."

While fat bike use is restricted in certain national parks, state parks in Wyoming and Idaho and several U.S. forest units are offering groomed singletrack for fat bikes.

"It's pretty cool when land managers take what they learn at our summits, purchase grooming equipment, and then create new places for fat bikes to be ridden," said Sjoquist. "And as a prominent federal land manager said to his staff last winter, 'these things are not going away. We need different management strategies to deal with them.' It goes to show that our Summits are making a difference."

For 2016, QBP will be supporting the following Regional Fat Bike Summits in conjunction with races and festivals the same weekends:

  • Crested Butte Regional Fat Bike Summit Friday, Jan. 28, in conjunction with the Fat Bike Worlds, Crested Butte, Colo., that weekend.
  • Fat Bike Summit of the North Friday, Feb. 19, Marquette, Mich., includes 906 Polar Roll Fat Bike race on Saturday, Feb. 20, and shuttle rides Sunday, Feb. 21.
  • Ogden Regional Fat Bike Summit Friday, Feb. 26 in conjunction with USA Cycling Fat Bike Nationals at Powder Mountain in Ogden, Utah, Saturday, Feb. 27.
  • Chugach Fat Bike Summit Friday, March 18 in conjunction with the Inaugural Chugach Fat Bike Bash and Gravity Worlds, Valdez. Alaska, March 18 - 20

CINCINNATI (BRAIN) — Oakley Cycles, a 34-year-old retail business, will move to a new location in January, and will change its name, as well.

The new store, in the Mariemont Crossing shopping center, will be known as Fifty West Cycling Company, as it will join Fifty West Brewing Company in Mariemont Crossing. The center includes the brewing company's production facility, sand volleyball courts, Mariemont Livery, and Pizzelii Pizza, which come together to create a recreation complex for outdoor enthusiasts and craft beer connoisseurs. The complex is at 7669 Wooster Pike.

Through an agreement with Great Parks of Hamilton County, an extension of the 75-mile long Little Miami Scenic Trail has been built that leads right into the new shop’s parking lot. The trail side location gives the retailer the opportunity to offer family and children’s bikes and products, bike rentals, lessons, specialty shop rides and post ride events, expanded community involvement with charities and bike advocacy, an outdoor seating space, cold drinks, energy bars and snacks.

Fifty West Cycling Company owner David Ariosa said, “We are excited to be moving to a space where we can offer our customers not only quality bikes, rentals, services and accessories but an adventure with friends and family. We are planning all kinds of fun: rides, riding lessons, bird-watching bike cruises and more!”

LOS ANGELES (BRAIN) — Bicycle Retailer’s final dealer tour of 2015 rolls out Tuesday morning in Los Angeles as editors, sponsors and guests set out on bikes to visit shops in several neighborhoods and cities along the sprawling Southern California region.

The tour will visit 11 retailers over three days. On the first day, riders will visit shops along the coast in Santa Monica, then the tour moves inland with visits to retailers in Los Angeles, Pasadena, Thousand Oaks, Agoura Hills, Woodland Hills and Calabasas.

Because of the expansive area the dealer tour is covering, the group will be departing from Marina Del Rey, Calif., for the first two day of visits, then moving to Westlake Village as the starting point for the final day.

The Dealer Tour will cover the gamut of bicycle retail, from Los Angeles mainstays like Helen’s Cycles, to newer retail stores like Bike Attack’s electric-only shop, which opened last February, and multi-store operations such as Incycle Bicycles.

“The Dealer Tour gives us the ability to have intimate contact with shops and learn about their businesses to understand how to make better products for them. It’s great exposure for our brand and an introduction to West Coast shops as well, which we don’t get to visit as often as we would like because we’re an East Coast company,” said Roy Hough, general manager of Hutchinson Tire North America, one of the tour’s sponsors.

Bicycle Retailer visited Atlanta, Ga., in March, and Vancouver, British Columbia, in June, as part of its Dealer Tour program this year.

This week, 25 dealer tour participants will get a firsthand look at Los Angeles County’s bike infrastructure and competitive retail landscape.

Follow along and message participants on Twitter via the #braindealertour hashtag. Watch for web updates during the week and a full report in the December 1 issue of the magazine. You can also follow along on Facebook and Instagram.

The BRAIN Los Angeles Dealer Tour is sponsored by Cannondale, Sugoi, Finish Line, Hutchinson, Mavic, Interbike and PeopleForBikes.

TORONTO (BRAIN) — KindHuman Bicycles is now distributing directly to IBDs in the U.S. and Canada. The high-end bike brand previously was sold primarily consumer direct with a handful of dealers, including a company store in Toronto.

The company said its new dealer program offers a low-risk way for shops to stock its bikes.

KindHuman co-founder Adam Abramowicz said, "We believe in the IBD, because we are one. Before we ever started the company, we spent years working in shops and for shops and The KindHuman Bicycle Store in Toronto has served as a ground-level test center for us to discover what real riders want and need. We are poised like no bike company ever, to deliver those products to them. The IBD has been the bedrock for this industry and we believe that they are the future for it and we want to be a part of that future."

The company plans to offer a frameset program, a Dealer Edition custom paint program, along with its Dealer-Direct program.

Abramowicz continued, "A shift is taking place within our industry and now more than ever, dealers and riders are looking for a brand to champion their wants and needs. The retail climate is changing. The major brands are just waiting for the right moment to sell direct and we're already beginning to see that from some. Our programs are designed to enable the dealer to profit off of this changing landscape."

KindHuman's co-founder and operating leader Gavin Brauer is visiting dealers in the New York City area this week to discuss program options.

Interested dealers can email the company at info@kindhuman.cc for program and pricing information.

The Groove Subaru team bike.

DENVER (BRAIN) — Two Denver brands, Domahidy Designs and Pactimo, are teaming up to offer race teams and other groups a program to get custom matching bikes and clothing.

"We're taking the custom kit program to the next level by allowing groups and teams to customize the bike to their organization's identity," said Steve Domahidy, the company's founder and president. "We did it for Groove Subaru and it was an enormous success, now we're expanding the program nationwide."

Once orders are finalized, teams and groups can submit their logo, graphics, and ideas to Domahidy Designs, along with the colors they would like the bike to be painted, and Domahidy Designs will customize the entire bike for them and return a graphics presentation for approval. In addition to the custom bike, each frame kit sold will come with Pactimo bibs and jersey to match.

"We think this will bring a new level of presentation to teams and groups that has never been achieved before," Domahidy said, "this is a win/win for everybody. We're giving organizations an extremely cool and unique product to ride and race, and at an aggressive discount from retail. In return, the groups and teams are out on the bikes helping spread the word about Domahidy Designs. We really believe this to be an amazing opportunity for all involved."

Prices will vary depending on quantities but can go as low as $950, which includes a frame, fork, headset, and the Pactimo race kit. This represents over a 50 percent discount from retail pricing.

"We are excited to partner with Domahidy Designs for this fantastic team offer," said Karl Heidgen, Pactimo's VP of custom sales, "Domahidy is known for paying attention to the small details that make a difference in ride quality and performance and to offer it with custom paint is an added bonus."

For the 2015 racing season, over half of the Groove Subaru Excel Sports Race Team took advantage of the pilot program and custom frames with Pactimo kits were delivered in March for the start of the racing season.

For 2016, Groove will expand the teams' commitment to Domahidy Designs. "We were the test subjects for this project, and have been thrilled with the results," said Alex Gillett, the co-owner of the Groove Subaru Excel Race Team. "Our team did awesome this year aboard Domahidy Designs Carbon Road bikes, and we look forward to furthering our relationship with this very cool start-up brand. Groove is committed to Domahidy Designs and we're working closely with them on development of future models as well. We couldn't be more pleased."

Minimum order quantities start at 10 units. Orders will require a 50 percent deposit upon final order, and all orders are due by Nov. 15 in order to make the 2016 racing season. Graphics will be finalized no later than Dec. 15.

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (BRAIN) — Retailers looking to make a splash with their window displays can project nearly anything — including videos or websites — onto their front window with technology from ProDisplay USA. An optional touch screen feature would allow passersby to interact with the display.

The technology is used by a variety of retailers, including real estate offices. It costs between $7,000 and $15,000 depending on options. Leases are also available and the company said that in other industries, suppliers often subsidize the displays for their retailers through co-op advertising programs.

The system includes a projector, a window-mounted screen (which is a film attached to the inside of the glass), and a source for content, such as a computer that can be set to show a video, live video feed, ad, website, PowerPoint or scenic or product images.

ProDisplay USA works with local installation teams around the country or can send company installers to the installation.

BSX launches second generation cuff, adding muscle oxygenation monitoring

$

AUSTIN, Texas (BRAIN) — BSX Athletics, which introduced a non-invasive blood lactate measuring cuff last year, has officially launched the second generation of the device, called the BSXinsight. The new iteration now tracks muscle oxygenation as well as lactate. It also adds daily activity tracking and connectivity with third-party mobile apps.

"Muscle Oxygenation is a new concept to the athletic world, but one that is gaining tremendous traction, and will soon be recognized as the most important real-time metric possible," said Dr. Dustin Freckleton, the CEO of BSX Athletic. "Oxygen is the central piece of energy production, which makes muscle oxygenation critical for any athlete to keep track of during their training. Similar to heart-rate training, muscle oxygenation can help you understand your daily training. However, where heart rate is influenced by conditional factors like stress, temperature, sleep, and hydration, SmO2 is constant, more dependable and accurate. Muscle oxygenation is also much more immediate."

Using optical technology and consumer-safe LEDs, BSXinsight tracks the critical energy systems in the muscles, and translates the information so an athlete knows how much effort they have left to give in their daily training. This helps athletes better identify trends and opportunities to improve their performance over time, the company said.

A custom compression sleeve comes with BSXinsight to ensure it's secured to the calf during endurance tests. BSXinsight can be worn anywhere during a daily activity, but a calf is recommended. It connects with ANT+ foot pods, heart rate monitors, and power meters; and broadcasts real-time bio-signal data to ANT+ watches and bike computers. It also connects to iOS and Android devices using Bluetooth Smart technology to relay information to the BSXinsight mobile app.

The mobile app was also redesigned to offer an easy and accessible way for athletes to interact with BSXinsight. The data is laid out so that athletes can review and manage their results in an intuitive and meaningful way. Additionally, the app supports a variety of new features including an interactive tutorial, supported real-time muscle oxygenation readouts, and a social sharing function.

BSXinsight has improved from its original version with better firmware, improved software, and a redesigned mobile application and web dashboard. It weighs 20 grams and is capable of up to eight hours of continuous use.

BSXinsight is available at www.bsxinsight.com in three editions: BSXinsight XR2 running edition ($299.99), BSXinsight XC2 cycling edition ($369.99) and BSXinsight XM2 multisport edition ($419.99).

Trek's online bike sales to launch 'very, very soon'

$

MADISON, Wis. (BRAIN) — Trek Bicycle will turn-on its new website — with its much-discussed online bike sales feature — "very, very soon" a company spokesman told BRAIN on Wednesday.

Trek announced the program in August at its Trek World dealer event in Madison. At the time, the company said it expected to begin online bike sales in late September. Now, Trek spokesman Eric Bjorling said completing the site has been more challenging and time consuming than expected.

"Making the Internet is hard, especially nowadays," Bjorling said with a chuckle. "There is a lot more data integration, a lot of connection to new things, including connecting to retailers and setting up their service and sales commissions on the site."

"We really want to come out of the gate firing on all cylinders. We know there are a lot of people watching, so we are erring on the side of getting it right, instead of getting it right now."

Bjorling said the site would certainly be live before the end of the year, and perhaps well before that. But he declined to name a specific time frame. "We kind of learned our lesson with time frames, so I'm going to stop short of putting a time frame on it."

Bjorling said that the bike sales program details have not changed since the program was announced. Under the program, consumers who order complete bikes from the site will have them delivered to their chosen nearby Trek retailer. The retailer will assemble the bike for consumer pick-up, or can offer delivery. The retailers receive commissions that are tied to the margins they would have made selling the same bike at their stores. The new site will also sell Trek and Bontrager products, and products from a few third party vendors. Those products will be delivered directly to consumers.

Other parts of the Trek Connect program that were announced in August have been activated already. That includes a fall catalog mailing and email promotions sent out on behalf of Trek dealers and tied to seasonal product promotions and displays at stores.

"We shipped the first catalog and got great feedback about it. We've also sent several emails through and had healthy open rates on them," Bjorling said. A Holiday season catalog is due to arrive in mailboxes Dec. 2. Bjorling said it would promote several new limited edition products.

Dealer Tour L.A.: Westside retailers serve the rich and famous

Our group rode along the Venice Beach bike path north to neighboring Santa Monica.
More bike lanes and shops feed into growing cycling culture.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (BRAIN) — Riding on palm tree-lined bike paths and green lanes in Los Angeles’ Westside on the first day of the BRAIN Dealer Tour, it’s clear that even though this region is renowned for its car-choked streets, a cycling oasis has sprung up in some of its affluent neighborhoods.

In Santa Monica, which is launching a bike-share program this week with 500 bikes, officials tout the city’s effort to tackle traffic, and claim cycling is one of the best ways to get around. The city adopted an ambitious bike action plan in 2011 that calls for programs and facilities to get more people on bikes.

“They want Santa Monica to be the friendliest bike city,” said Jay Wolff, owner of Helen’s Cycles, one of the area’s oldest bike shops. “And that’s brought in folks who think they can open a store.”

Wolff said the number of retailers has grown in tandem with Santa Monica’s growing bike infrastructure, even in light of the red tape entrepreneurs must overcome to open a new business here. He estimates that some 13 bike stores within three miles serve this thriving beachside community, including REI in that number.

Helen’s is among the most well known and the largest with six stores in the Westside, though the Santa Monica store on Broadway is the biggest with 11,000 square feet and three floors. The store serves as the main warehouse and distribution center for Helen’s other stores in Beverly Hills, Arcadia, Manhattan Beach, Marina Del Rey and Westwood.

“There’s a lot of wealth in this neighborhood,” Wolff said, adding that celebrities including Harrison Ford and Dennis Quaid are among the store’s regular clientele. “There’s a lot of crazy money and play money here.”

Within a hop and a skip from Helen’s is Cynergy Cycles. The large building on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard, which was a former airplane hangar for the Santa Monica airport, is undergoing renovations as it becomes one of Specialized’s flagship concept stores, said Cody Pham, the store’s newest employee.

Specialized bought the store, which opened in 2006, from the original owners in 2012 and has plans to develop it into a community space and lifestyle store, Pham said.

Back on Broadway, one of Cynergy’s former employees and a renown fit guru in the L.A. region, Steven Carre opened one of Santa Monica’s newest shops — Bike Effect — to offer bike fitting services and custom bikes. The 2,000-square-foot store, which recently celebrated its fifth year in business, has expanded beyond its “fit studio” origins. Now the store has an expanded service area, and stocks some Parlee, Moots and BMC bikes, which are its “anchor” brands and a sliver of others like Guru that offer customizable geometry as well as high-end clothing from brands like Machines for Freedom, Velocio and Rapha.

Like the bikes it custom builds and fits to clients, Bike Effect stands out for its sleek merchandising and fixtures. From bamboo floors to its espresso bar, powered Park Tool repair stands to a custom water fountain for riders who drop in to refill their bottles, the store exudes a luxurious shopping experience and aesthetic.

“We both like clean, modern design — this was a fit studio,” said Alison Letson, co-owner. “We never wanted to have a bike shop. This is a boutique and we build relationships.”

“The term bike fit is used incredibly loosely these days,” added Carre, who is booked 2-3 weeks out for bike fits in the offseason and up to a month or longer during the summer. “But there’s no magic system. It always comes down to person doing it. We strive to be the Michelin three-star equivalent in fitting.”

Bike fits range from $250 to $400 (a four-hour process that includes an extensive cleat and shoe fit) at Bike Effect. And like other Westside retailers, the store’s customers include famous names such as baseball’s Barry Bonds and NFL player Dion Jordan, who because of his height, required a custom bike made for his size.

And off of Main Street, another store also lays claim to the area’s celebrity business. Bike Attack has two stores on Main Street that while they bear the same name, couldn’t be more different inside. The newest one opened in February and only sells e-bikes. And takes a design cue from tech stores with its white fixtures and minimalist approach to inventory.

Owner Ericson Monsalud opened the first Bike Attack in 1999. Monsalud, who previously ran a bike and outdoor shop on a U.S. Army base in Berlin, Germany, returned to the U.S. in the late ‘90s after the Clinton administration closed the base, and opened his first bike shop in Venice. He closed it and opened in Santa Monica on Main Street in 2004. At the time, Main Street was vacant of bike shops. Now there are seven. And Main Street has become known as e-bike central as most of the shops sell or rent e-bikes.

Among the shop’s diverse customer base, Monsalud calls out members of rock bands including Metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers, actresses Pamela Anderson and Frances McDormand, and actors Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn as some of the stars who frequent the store. “We get a lot of celebrities,” Monsalud said. “We treat them like normal people.”

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (BRAIN) — Santa Monica is debuting its latest environmental initiative: Breeze Bike Share, presented by Hulu, this week. The program will offer 500 bikes across 75 stations and provide residents with a sustainable way to get around town, according to city manager Rick Cole.

“By promoting biking instead of driving, Santa Monica’s bike share program could directly reduce the city's annual CO2 emissions by approximately 80 metric tons a year, which is the equivalent of planting 2,000 trees,” said Global Green USA VP of Programs Walker Wells. “When Breeze Bike Share is used to make that critical link to the Expo Line or a bus, we can cut the greenhouse gas pollution by 10 times or 800 metric tons a year. Santa Monica is leading the way to a region-wide bike share reality, which could end up reducing hundreds of metric tons of CO2 annually.”

The city is inviting residents and the public to the official unveiling Thursday at 8:15 a.m. at City Hall on Main Street. The event kicks off with music and refreshments, followed by a press conference at 9 a.m. and then the official Breeze Bike Share roll out. Hundreds of community members will take part as the ribbon is cut and the green bikes roll down Main Street and out into the city.

Breeze Bike Share is one way Santa Monica is working to improve the community’s quality of life and encourage a healthy lifestyle. The program is designed to connect residents, the city’s workforce, and visitors with existing transit to support first-last mile connections. It will feature hubs at all three Santa Monica EXPO Light Rail stations, making for an easy connection to the train when it opens next spring.

The program is offering founding memberships for $99 per year at www.breezebikeshare.com.
